Community Assistance Program

The Community Assistance Program was established in 1999 at the request of The Middletown Clergy Association.   Before then, people in need of financial assistance would walk from church to church, in and around the downtown business district, seeking help.  The Clergy Association asked if people seeking financial assistance could be referred to our Outreach worker at St. Vincent De Paul Place. At a centralized location, more individuals and families could apply and receive consistent help with dignity in effort to end or avoid homelessness.

Requests are made and verified by St. Vincent De Paul for needs such as rental assistance, transportation, utility assistance, and security deposits. Checks are issued by St. Vincent De Paul Place to the appropriate person or company (a landlord, transportation, school, or service provider.)   Each person granted assistance is asked to repay the money overtime if possible.  Forty percent of all assistance is paid back to St. Vincent De Paul Place, allowing us to serve more people over time.

Funding for the Community Assistance Program is provided by churches, civic and corporate organizations throughout the Middletown area.  Our Community Assistance Partners, contribute monthly to provide all of the needed financial support granted to individuals and families in crisis.  There are currently 28 community partners who refer individuals and families for assistance to St. Vincent De Paul Place.  They then divide the monthly expense of direct assistance among themselves.
